ABOUT ME
HELLO!
My name is Grace and I'm a mother of a 23 year old autistic son & an 18 year old neurotypical high schooler. I've spent the better part of my parenting years trying to balance the roles of mother, caregiver, and person named Grace. I had a lot of internalized stories about those roles and the "right" way to do them.
Trying to get it all "right" sent me down the road of exhaustion, overwhelm, and anxiety. I stumbled a lot, lost my way, and shed oh so many tears. When I could no longer cry and felt nothing but emptiness inside, I knew something had to change. And the only thing I can control is ME. So I went inside and started listening to the stories I'd been telling myself.
"You're not doing enough"
"You have to fix him"
"He'll never belong"
The stories were horrible and not something I would ever say to anyone else. So why was I saying them to myself? I started to question those stories:
"I wonder where THAT one came from?"
"Why do I believe that?"
"Is it really, REALLY true?"
The more I questioned the stories, the more they started to change, and the better I felt. The stories of guilt and shame over not doing enough for my autistic son became: "You need to be care for yourself too."
That particular inner voice has helped me decide what is "right" for me and my family. I started living from the inside out and found the beauty in the complexity of parenting, caregiving, and living.

Parenting any child is complex and demanding. When that child has special needs, an additional layer is added. It is so easy to get stuck in the responsibilities and expectations of being a caregiver. After experiencing it myself, I know how hard it can be to make the changes needed to get unstuck.
As a certified and accredited life coach, I work with parents of children with special needs to redefine their role as caregivers so they can start balancing parenting, caregiving, and living.
